Language brings people together
Last Festival we launched our TOITŪ TE REO programme strand. TOITŪ TE REO translates as holding fast to our language and it is our desire to let the Māori language resonate through the platform of the arts.
This year TOITŪ TE REO returns – te reo Māori will be heard, seen and felt every day of the Festival.
From our opening night event TIRA, to a special immersive music event; from performances in schools in te reo Māori, to Māori artists and communities working together in Whānui – at TOITŪ TE REO audiences can engage, enjoy and participate.

I te Ahurei o tērā tau, i rewa a Toitū Te Reo. Ko te whakamāoritanga o TOITŪ TE REO ko te ū ki te reo kia ita, me te aha, e tūmanako ana mātou ka rangona ko te reo Māori mā roto mai i te ao toi.
Kua auraki mai a TOITŪ TE REO i tēnei tau – ka rangona te reo Māori, ā-taringa mai, ā-whatu mai, ā-roto mai anō i ia rā o te Ahurei.
Mai anō i te hui whakatuwhera i te pō tuatahi, i TIRA, tae atu ki tētahi huihuinga puoro motuhake e rongo ai tō katoa; mai anō i ētahi whakaaturanga reo Māori ki rō kura, ki te tōpūtanga mai o ētahi ringatoi Māori me ētahi hapori e mahi tahi ana ki te kaupapa o Whānui – mā TOITŪ TE REO te whakaminenga e aronui mai, e rongo ai i te pārekareka, otirā, e whai wāhi pū mai anō.
Tirohia ngā whakaaturanga, ā mātou hōtaka Ako Auaha, Wātea anō, otirā, wherawherahia te maha noa atu mā te taupānga TOITŪ TE REO.

Imagine a world where darkness is your every day, where true sight relies on sensation, sound and feeling. Ka Pō, Ka Waiata is a creative collaboration in which musicians work to shape responses and environments of sound for darkness.

Whānui is a communal adventure: a collection of participatory arts projects in which an amazing mix of people who call Auckland home create, join in with and experience artworks in the many spaces and places that form our neighbourhoods.
