ATA REIRA
VOICES NEW ZEALAND CHAMBER CHOIR
NEW ZEALAND YOUTH CHOIR
(AOTEAROA/NEW ZEALAND)
Wednesday 18 March 2015
Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall
Conductors Dr Karen Grylls ONZM and David Squire
... that moment when the first light is reflected in the eastern sky before the sun rises, that moment after darkness, that moment of clarity after being in a dark place ...
Ata Reira is a choral celebration of light, performed on Wednesday 18 March at the Auckland Town Hall's Great Hall during Auckland Festival 2015.
The NZ Youth Choir, Voices NZ Chamber Choir, Kristin Schools Euphony and James Tibbles (organ), will join forces to perform Bob Chilcott's Canticles of Light.
This three-movement work first asks for protection from the night, and then concludes with a song for the morning that looks forward to a new beginning.
Other works will include Whitacre's Lux Aurumque, Schafer's Epitaph for Moonlight, settings of O nata lux by Tallis and Lauridsen and a choral setting of Elgar's Nimrod with the text lux aeterna. The choirs are also proud to present a newly commissioned work in te reo Maori, composed by Tuirina Wehi.
This is an opportunity to experience the vibrancy of New Zealand's premier choirs, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the spine-tingling sounds of some fabulous music.
Award-winning Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir is an internationally recognised semi- professional choir, described by the UK's Guardian newspaper as " a brilliant ...chamber choir."
The nationally selected NZ Youth Choir nurtures and promotes extraordinary, young New Zealand talent.
Drawing its members from the nation's best singers and developing voices, the choirs alumni include Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Anna Leese, Tecwyn Evans and Jonathan Faafetia Lemalu.
Voices NZ Chamber Choir and NZ Youth Choir operate under the aegis of Choirs New Zealand, and perform independently and together to rave reviews and acclaim.
During the Festival, the choirs will be part of the APOs A Child of Our Time, Sir Michael Tippet's unique anti-war oratorio featuring soloists Indra Thomas, Victoria Simmonds, Nicky Spence and Derek Welton, on Saturday 21 March.
Voices NZ will also feature in Ross Harris and Vincent OSullivan's Requiem for the Fallen, performed by the NZ String Quartet and soloists Horomona Horo and Richard Greagar on Friday 13 March.
